EJ's Inspirational Journey
EJ’s childhood was a delicate balance between farm work, school, and his deepest passion – soccer. Often, homework took a backseat as he woke up early to fetch water for the family’s gardens. Despite the challenges, EJ would sneak away to play soccer with friends, fueled by the dream of becoming a professional player. His father, believing soccer was a distraction, sent him away to live in farming villages for over six years. But EJ’s determination always led him back to the soccer field.
In The Gambia, the absence of opportunities often drives teens towards early marriages, drugs, or criminal activities. Tragically, some embark on perilous journeys to Europe, crossing the Mediterranean by boat, resulting in many lives lost. For EJ, soccer was his beacon of hope, a path that kept him away from such desperate choices. He dreamt of playing soccer professionally and pursued that dream with unwavering focus.
At age 16, EJ left Gilkock Academy to join the Banjul Hawks in the capital. During the same period, more than 50 youths from the Academy embarked on the treacherous journey to Europe, with some meeting tragic ends. EJ’s dedication to soccer had kept him safe. In 2007, he earned a spot on the u20 Gambian National Team, traveling internationally and becoming a sports hero in his village.
Becoming a Mentor
EJ’s journey from humble beginnings to international recognition inspired many, especially the children in his village. These young fans became his biggest cheerleaders, and EJ embraced the role of a mentor. His path led him to play professionally in Finland before arriving in the U.S., where he signed with the LA Blues as their center back. In Los Angeles, he began coaching underprivileged youth, sharing his knowledge and passion for the sport.
Today, EJ resides in Seattle, coaching select and premier youth soccer teams for Seattle United. His dedication to the Gilkock Football Academy has remained steadfast throughout the past decade. With the support of generous families in Europe, Canada, and the U.S., EJ has delivered new cleats, clothing, and equipment to the Academy while continuing to mentor and support its players.
